Working to prevent youth substance abuse in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, MI. 􀂋 􀂋 􀂋 􀂋 􀂋 􀂋 􀂋

The 2011 high school prom and graduation season is quickly approaching.

Although research shows that the majority of teens in Charlevoix and Emmet counties do not drink, prom and graduation celebrations can provide temptations that could produce tragic results. During this celebratory time, Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin and Charlevoix County Sheriff Don Schneider will again be partnering with SAFE in Northern Michigan, the area coalition working to promote community awareness of youth substance abuse and participation in prevention in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, to send a reminder of the laws and consequences to junior and senior students and parents.

The Sheriff’s Letter also includes the Family Guide for Teen Parties, with information on hosting and attending a party, local statistics on substance use, and ideas for parents to help keep their children safe. Contrary to popular belief, parents remain their child’s most respected and influential source of beliefs, attitudes and values – even into their college years. Their decision to use alcohol and other drugs will largely be based on expectations that parents set.

This effort is made possible with the leadership of SAFE in Northern Michigan and the support of Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Emmet Probate Court, Char-Em Intermediate School District, Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Harbor Hall, and Mitchell Graphics.

Positive comments from parents, school personnel, church officials, and the leaders in the community have been received about this coalition effort each of the four years this mailing has gone out. Local law enforcement agencies, their county prosecutors, and coalition members of SAFE in Northern Michigan encourage our communities to help make this season of celebration a safe one.

Law enforcement agency representatives and SAFE in Northern Michigan coalition members gathered to kick off the SAFE Prom and Graduation Season.
